How to Find the Right School for Your Autistic Child
Choosing the right school for your child is a big decision. For parents of an autistic child, finding the right educational environment can feel even more complicated. You are not simply looking for a good school. You are looking for a setting where your child will feel understood, supported and safe, while also having the opportunity to learn, develop and build confidence.
Every autistic child is different. What works well for one child may not work for another, which is why finding the right school is often about looking beyond the curriculum and considering the whole environment.
Whether you are considering a mainstream school, a specialist school or a therapeutic school for children with autism, there are several things you can look at to help you make an informed decision.

Research potential schools
Start by researching schools that could meet your child's needs, including mainstream schools with strong SEND provision, specialist autism schools and therapeutic schools. Look at their curriculum, approach to SEND, staffing, facilities and available support.
A website can only tell you so much, so speaking to the school and arranging a visit can help you understand whether they have experience supporting children with similar needs.
Visit several schools
If possible, visit several schools so you can compare different environments. Look at the atmosphere, classroom structure, facilities, outdoor spaces and how staff interact with children.
If appropriate, bring your child with you. Their response to the environment and staff can give you valuable insight into whether the school feels right for them.
Ask about autism and SEND support
Ask staff how they support autistic children and meet individual needs. You may want to ask about:
-
Autism experience and staff training
-
Communication and sensory support
-
Support when a child becomes overwhelmed
-
Reasonable adjustments
-
Behaviour support
-
Therapeutic services
-
How teachers and therapists work together
-
Communication with parents
A school should be able to clearly explain how its support is tailored to individual children.
Consider the whole child
Academic progress is only one part of a child's development. Consider how the school will support your child's communication, social development, emotional wellbeing, independence and everyday skills.
Think about your child's individual strengths, interests and needs, including any support they may require with transitions, communication, sensory processing or emotional regulation.
Understand the school's approach to behaviour
Ask how the school responds when a child becomes distressed or displays challenging behaviour. Understanding what may be behind a behaviour and how staff help a child communicate their needs is an important part of supporting autistic children.
For some children, an integrated approach combining education and therapy can provide additional support.
Look at communication between school and home
A strong relationship between parents and school can make a real difference. Ask how the school communicates with families, how progress is reviewed and how parents are involved when a child's needs change.
Could a therapeutic school be right for your child?
For some children, combining education with specialist therapeutic support can help them access learning more successfully. Therapeutic schools bring education and therapy together to support areas such as communication, development, sensory needs and behaviour.
However, every child is different. The most appropriate setting will depend on your child's individual needs and the support each school can provide.
Trust what you learn from your visits
Reports and professional advice are important, but your experience of visiting a school matters too. Consider how your child responds to the environment, how staff interact with them and whether you feel the school genuinely understands their needs.
There may not be one perfect school, but the right environment should help your child feel supported, access learning and continue to develop.
